Atlantic City’s boardwalk

has had a long and turbulent history, one filled with ups and downs. Right now though, things are looking up. Recently, Forbes Traveler named Atlantic City’s boardwalk number one in the United States.

The boardwalk of today features a number of improvements and advancements since its original construction in 1870. Then again, when the boardwalk was originally built, its only purpose was to help limit the amount of sand dragged in by visitors coming from beachside. The original boardwalk eventually spanned 7 miles along the coast from Atlantic City to Longport, making it the longest in the world. In the Hurricane of 1944 much of this was destroyed. Now the Atlantic City boardwalk is an impressive 5.75 miles long, still longer than any other boardwalk on the planet. The construction has also changed to make use of steel reinforcements which help to ensure that this incarnation of the boardwalk isn’t going anywhere.

But what about it makes the Atlantic City boardwalk so attractive to potential visitors? Simply, everything! If you have ever been to Atlantic City you are aware of the fact that the boardwalk is host to many shops, restaurants, attractions for people of all ages, and a great atmosphere. It also doesn’t hurt that most of the city’s casinos are completely accessible via the boardwalk, including the Showboat, Taj Mahal, and Caesar’s.

Needless to say, the Atlantic City boardwalk is an American icon with a rich past and an even richer future.
