The Music – even the 20 somethings know the best songs from the 70′s and 80′s. All of the sudden, bam, a song you loved back in the day is on and you start migrating to the dance floor. From “Y.M.C.A.” – Village People (1979) to “Get Down Tonight” – KC & the Sunshine Band (1975) and great songs of the 1980′s.

The Crowd – This scene is very relaxed and enjoyable. The music and the experience breaks down all barriers and allows everyone to have a great time. You’ll find people of all ages from the early 20′s to the late 40′s. Nicely dressed, good looking people, especially hot cougars are a plenty.

The DJ- Unlike a modern club, requests are virtually impossible to played, at Boogie Nights, the DJ ensures your requests get played and that everyone is on the dance floor at all times. You can request Shout Outs for a small gratuity, which adds to the excitement of the night.

Table & Bottle Service- If you want to chill in style, try either preferred Table Seating next to the dance floor or the VIP Booths behind the DJ. Both have liquor minimums but not bad. Special packages are available for Bachelorettes and Bachelor Parties.

Streakers & Roller Girls- This is wild. The roller girls are extremely sexy, wearing short shorts and skimpy tops, they will make the men’s head spin. Be aware of the streaker, a completely nude, really hot guy may pop up behind you and run through the crowd at different times of the night, especially be aware of the song “The Streak” for the potential of a hot streaker.

Front of Line Passes – You can find Boogie Nights Front of the Line Passes online, this saves you about 45 minutes on a busy night because you bypass the line and go directly to the VIP Line to the left of the podium. Check the link above for VIP Access to Boogie Nights.

For the reasons we feature above and the fact that hot Cougars and Swingers are everywhere, you’ll enjoy the music and the entire Boogie Nights Atlantic City experience! I’ll see you there this Friday or Saturday night!

Atlantic City Nightclub Scene!

Around this time of year, among the most frequent requests I get are my opinions on the city’s nightclubs. Nightlife in Atlantic City has been on a huge upswing over the last five years or so – right along with the expansion in restaurants logically would follow an expansion of nightlife. Restaurants, nightlife, and shopping – the holy trinity of non-gaming attractions. Here’s the skinny on some of Atlantic City’s better post-dinner venues.

DUSK at Caesars – Newest and #1 Rated in AC

Atlantic City’s “Hottest” and newest nightclub located Caesars Atlantic City. One of the Original Partners was DJ AM who passed away in 2009. The most interesting aspect of Dusk nightclub is it’s layout. The design is a series of concentric ovals, with two full bars encircling the outermost ring and the DJ booth (AKA Dusk’s central command center) is located in the center. You’ll find comfortable private booths surrounding the dance floor, where most clubs don’t have them, front and center. You’ll find cool spinning lights hanging from the ceiling emitting vivid, electric colors that flash to the beat of the music. The lighting experience is impressive, you’ll be amazed. What really sets Dusk apart from other Atlantic City nightclubs are its escape routes. For example If you need a smoke or some freesh air or want to talk elsewhere, the DUSK connects to a gated, outdoor patio area that’s easily accessed without having to gain re-entry into the main club. You’ll also find the Dawn room, a cool looking separate space within the main club that has a more relaxed feeling, complete with private tables, this is where you want to escape when getting closer with your date.

The Fifth at the Chelsea Nightclub Experience

The 5th floor at the Chelsea Hotel is a happening nightlife experience. C5 is really trendy inside bar and nightclub that is sure to please players of all ages. The Cabana Club is the outdoor nightlife experience surrounding the pool on the 5th floor. Great outdoor bar, live music or DJ. You may want to work on getting on the VIP list as the lines on Saturday nights tend to be long. Have fun and enjoy the 5th at Chealsea (c5 and Cabana Bar).

Casbah at the Taj Mahal

Every nightclub claims that they are the one spot that you go to in order to be seen by the socialite crowd. Casbah lays that claim as well, but they have more of a right to do so. Casbah is the granddaddy of AC nightlife, and at one point way back in the day it was the only nightclub located within a casino. The enormous space with a seemingly nonexistent ceiling is ringed by catwalks, in which dance the famed Casbah Girls. They’re famous for one reason: they’re hot. Nuff said. The crowd also tends to be more of the young, hip, well-dressed variety that also knows their way around a dance floor. Bring your rhythm when you go here – if you don’t, you’ll be the only one without. Drinks can run on the expensive side, especially when you’re buying round after round for that hot (and not over-dressed) bachelorette party that you’re looking for some VIP treatment from. Ladies never pay a cover, so the proverbial fishing lake is always well-stocked. In summer, Casbah will typically put about 4,000 people thru the door on any given Saturday night. Happy hunting, gentlemen.

The Pool at Harrahs – The Pool After Dark

Who would have thought that the Pool at Harrah’s would turn into a successful nightclub venue in Atlantic City. Most people that have been there for themed party or on a Friday or Saturday night have said it was incredible. Great music, fabulous cocktails, beautiful bikini clad waitresses and bartenders and a whole lot of good looking men and women. Check with Harrah’s directly for the latest party schedule for The Pool, we guarantee a hot night for everyone !

Boogie Nights Atlantic City - Resorts Casino – Retro 70′s, 80′s

Looking for Cougars? If you love a 70 & 80′s Flashback, you have to check out Boogie Nights at Resorts Casino! You can dance to your favorite Retro Flashback songs from the 70′s and 80′s every Friday and Saturday night. If you have great memories like I do, from the 70′s and 80′s don’t miss Boogie Nights at Resorts. See you there. Cougar Town in Atlantic City.

32 Degrees Quarter at the Tropicana

32 Degrees Luxe Lounge, known to the in-crowd that frequents it as just “32”, is a small and swanky lounge on the third floor of the Quarter at Tropicana. The interior has two bars with seating, but the prime real estate is the booths and tables where the sole purpose is to be seen. 32 is absolutely the place to go to debut those new designer clothes – it’s one of the few places in Atlantic City where both male and female fashion knowledge along with coveted expensive labels might be recognized and get you respect.

On weekend nights you will probably find just as many people waiting to get in as are already in the lounge, so you might want to consider calling ahead and booking bottle service. The smarts of calling ahead are directly proportional to the size of your group: if you have 15 people and show up no-notice, you can rightfully expect to wait. 32 Degrees offers VIP bottle service (609-572-0032, www.32lounge.com) where you can buy a bottle of booze and guarantee yourself a table. High-end service, a beautiful wait staff and a jet-set crowd are the fundamentals of getting in and hanging out. Tell Brian the VIP Manager that the Mole sent you – he and I go back a few years.

Blue Martini at Bally’s

This dark, chic setting located at the Boardwalk entrance off Bally’s casino floor offers more than 100 variations of martinis, top-shelf liquor, live music and a bar with a built-in frosted ice rail. Blue Martini had the first ice rail in town (before Red Square) and live entertainment is offered Fridays and Saturdays. Atlantic City Nightclubs

Besides live entertainment, there’s the three 60-inch plasma screens located along the wall behind the bar. Blue Martini features 26 vodkas from 12 countries and a catalog of more than 100 designer flavored martinis ranging from watermelon to chocolate. All martinis are presented and shaken at the table. Those same martinis are half-price Monday thru Friday from 5 to 7pm, making for one of the best happy hours in town.

Don’t think that Blue Martini is solely for the martini enthusiast. Single-malt Scotches, small batch Bourbons and a wine by the glass menu accent the martini catalog to create a well-rounded selection of high-end choices.

Blue Martini is open seven days a week and seats 125. It’s a great bar, but that’s all. There’s not much room to dance to the music, so it’s more of a relaxed sit-down atmosphere.

Club Escape (Formerly Deja Vu)

This multi-level dance club is dark, mysterious and packed to the walls almost every weekend night. The music ranges from House, Progressive House, Club and Disco Classics, all played on a 20,000 watt sound system that will make your bones and your rump shake. Club Escape is an upscale establishment with a liberal but strictly enforced dress code (no jeans, no sneakers). Scantily clad shot girls & guys roam the various neon sectors of the club. Club Escape offers six inside bars, three levels and a late-night kitchen serving sandwiches, snacks, pizza or seafood. Open 9pm-5am, and the cover charge varies from $10-$20 after 11pm. The crowds here in general may be lighter and the atmosphere more laid back than in the casino-based clubs, and the entertainment staff is not opposed to switching the vibe to a more hip-hop type if so requested.

Game On Pier at Caesars

While not a full-time nightclub, Game On! offers bottle service after 10pm in addition to the bar, HD monitors, and existing menu. Most of the seated areas (booths, skyboxes) except for the bar have a one bottle or two cases of beer rule during late night. Bottle service and everything else that Game On! is famous for, plus the city’s only mechanical bull – I smell a winner.

10Til AC Hilton

Hilton’s new Saturday-night-only venue caters to an older nightlife (think 35 to 55 instead of 21 to 35) crowd. Their rather hot jazz singer was on this month’s cover of CityAtlantic, and just about everyone in town has been asking where she has been all my life. 10Til, formerly known as the Chairman’s Club, is the place where you can actually hear the music and you won’t need to scream across the table to your date. For just a $10 cover, that’s a great deal. Also featured here is the spectacular wraparound ocean view and leather furniture. Said Phil Juliano, senior regional vice president of marketing for the Hilton and Resorts Atlantic City. “It’s an adult nightclub experience that focuses on good food, great entertainment, quality desserts and fine cocktails,” “There’s going to be top-notch hors d’oeuvres, fine wines, champagnes … things we know patrons desire.”

Mixx at Borgata

There are a few people out there who still gripe about Mixx eliminating its food service (tapas and sushi, how we miss ye), but nobody complains when the doors open on Fridays and Saturdays at 10pm. Those doors don’t close until the party’s over, and there’s plenty of action to be had between the dance floor, the bar, and the VIP bottle service that such hotshots as Howard Stern and Billy Crystal have made use of. Despite the Borgata’s opening of mur.mur just across the property, Mixx is still a club that you can go to just to be seen. Its hip factor is still alive and well.

Mur.mur Borgata

Borgata had to open a second club because one premium nightlife venue simply wasn’t enough in the building that locals have dubbed “Vegas East”. Mur.mur is a standout among local clubs because it fills a niche that no one else had: Mondays. “Mur.mur Mondays” have been the talk of the town since they started, since it gives weeknight city guests, conventioneers, and local industry workers who have weekdays off a place to party should the need arise. Mur.mur, just like its sister Mixx, is open 10pm until whenever on Fridays and Saturdays, with Mondays added on at Mur.mur.

Planet Rose

Another entry in the “not completely a nightclub” file, Planet Rose Karaoke Bar is the only full-time karaoke spot in the city, always ready to go for when you’ve had one too many and the inspiration to channel Neil Diamond kicks in. In addition, Planet Rose hosts the Men of the Cave male revue show on Saturday nights, making it a bachelorette magnet. Liquor, karaoke, and bachelorettes: what else could you ask for? This venue is small, but what in lacks in size it more than makes up for in personality.

There’s the story on the club scene in Atlantic City – like the city itself, it’s Always Turned On, and a visitor should have no trouble finding what suits their taste.

Atlantic City Top Rated Beach Bars

Trump Plaza Beach Bar

Sammy’s Beach Formerly Bikini Beach Bar – Bally’s casino

Hilton Beach Bar

The Cabana Club – Chelsea Hotel

The Deck – Trump Marina

With the arrival of summer at the South Jersey Shore, so comes another season of fun on the Atlantic City Beaches. If lounging around, people watching, or worshipping the sun doesn’t fit your bill, a handful of Atlantic City’s casinos offer the perfect alternative: beaches plus adult beverages and live music. At night these waterfront watering holes turn into exciting nightclubs and Atlantic City live music venues.

Beach bars in Atlantic City are a hot item, and they were almost legislated out of existence a few years ago by a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) ruling that would have seen all the bars have last call if not for the casinos doing some tweaking. The DEP was alarmed over the bars’ size as related to beach encroachment, which resulted in the casinos adapting to the ruling and in some cases losing their bars. The beach that at one point had seven bars on it now has but three, thanks to the aforementioned DEP ruling and the unfortunate demise of Nikki Beach at Resorts. From what the Mole heard at the time, the Nikki Beach people were supposedly infamous for doing little to no market research before opening. They would negotiate a deal and set up at a location perceived to be a hotspot at the time (Atlantic City definitely qualifies as such) and build their establishment. The market research thing came back to bite Nikki’s fine behind, as they only lasted one season on our sands. There was a rumor floating around for a time after Nikki Beach packed up and left town that Borgata had offered them some kind of relocation deal, but as good as Borgata is in numerous areas, someone forgot to tell the ladies and gentlemen there that they don’t have an attractive parcel of beach to work with, and the name of the potential client was Nikki Beach, and its offering in question was a beach bar. No punch line needed.

And so, back in present times, we move on to covering where sand, surf, booze, and bodies converge: the Atlantic City – South Jersey beach bars. We start at the southern end of our casino strip, at Hilton’s Beach Bar. Hilton’s bar is the only of the three left standing that is built on the Boardwalk side of the sand dunes, meaning that while it’s a very clean and well-run operation, the sea breeze tends not to reach into the bar area, and there’s next to nothing in the way of an ocean view. Having said that, Hilton still gets props because of the cleanliness, the overall operation, and let’s not forget the cigars. Smokers rejoice; the bar is outside. Outside equals no ban. Hilton’s Beach Bar will open daily until Labor Day from 11:30am-10pm, and has both DJ’s and live music. Speaking of DJ’s, ageless wonder Jerry Blavat broadcasts live from 5-7pm on Friday nights. The Hilton Beach Bar is Hot Hot Hot!

Moving north, we come next to the Trump Plaza Beach Bar, at Mississippi and the Boardwalk. The Plaza took advantage of the beach bar craze when it first started back in 2002, and its 15,000 square foot imprint is the largest in town. Open daily at 11:30am in season for those who like their frozen fruity things to arrive with lunch, Plaza’s bar has a full kitchen and several private areas available for rental. You can find everything from karaoke on Thursday nights or maybe even the occasional nuptial. The Trump Plaza’s beach can and does support weddings. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are no slouch here, between a Friday night dance party, Saturday live bands starting at 1pm, and Sunday being Motown Night. Trump Plaza is also your spot if you fancy a drink on the beach after dinner or a show: they close at midnight on weekdays and at 2am on Friday and Saturday. >> Schedule of Events >> Trump Plaza Beach Bar is the Rated “Best Waterfront Bar in Atlantic City” by both visitors and locals alike. More Info

Last but certainly not least at Ohio and the Wooden Way (Boardwalk) is Sammy’s Beach Formerly Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar. Among the highlights at the Bally’s Atlantic City offering are those that are true to its name: the bikini-clad servers. That alone should make it worth a stop. DJ’s spin from 4pm to close on weekdays, and live music on the weekends. It offers a full menu plus a cut-down version of the menu from the famed Pickles deli, along with eight beachfront cabanas. Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar Hotline = 609-340-2909. Get updated special event information, weather report and more.

Finally, regarding beach cabanas: a bunch of people wonder how those cabanas get booked and how far in advance you have to reserve. Here’s a tip: the cabanas are easy as sin to get weekdays, meaning Monday thru Thursday. Just pay the fee. The only weekdays that those cabanas will be hard to get is the 4th of July and the two airshow days. Otherwise, you should be OK in reserving the day of or day before. On the weekends, as with anything else in our town, the game changes completely. Those cabanas, no matter what property they belong to, are usually occupied by the wives and kids of that property’s massive gamblers. Cabanas on the beach are almost nothing more than an extension of the hotel’s suite-upgrade policy: fine for all during the week, restrictive as sin come Friday and Saturday.

As a side note, we feel it’s necessary to include the Deck at the Trump Marina a outdoor bar, nightclub and restaurant. You’ll experience one of Atlantic City’s best outdoor bar / live music venue. Have Fun and Enjoy your next trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Cabana Club at the Chelsea on the 5th Floor is another outdoor experience you don’t want to miss. Live music or a hot DJ, go inside to C5 or mingle around the pool in outdoor setting overlooking Atlantic City.

Atlantic City Casinos Summer Rates are available online now or by calling 1-888-392-8288. Hotel Rooms Are Still Available For All Weekends now through September 4th, 2010.

Lady Gaga in Atlantic City has been rescheduled for July 4th, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall.

Originally sceduled to perform at the Borgata Events Center on January 16th, Lady Gaga was unable to go on and had to cancel of few of her show dates. Atlantic City is thankful she’s returning, the original venue (Borgata Events Center) had been sold out for months prior to the January show.

The Lady Gaga July 4th show will take place at Boardwalk Hall, the seating layout will be Floor GA (General Admission) and reserved seats in sections 103 to 124 and 203 to 224. I personally enjoy a reserved seat, I’m not into fighting for position on the floor and losing my spot because I had to go to the restroom. In a reserved seat, I can sit down, relax, enjoy a few beverages and rock to the sounds of Lady Gaga.

Seating Tips: Any reserved seat, we also recommend sections 124 -126 or 102 – 106. If you sit at the far end like sections 108 – 116 you can see the giant video screen perfect.

A few companies still have Tickets available for Lady Gaga Atlantic City, the best selection and prices we found was the Atlantic City Ticket Guys at 1-866-881-2999.

Lady Gaga in Atlantic City will perform her hits, all of which been top 10 in USA’s Billboard Hot 100 charts. In order of release date, Poker Face (peaking at #1), Just Dance (#1), Love Games (#5), Paparazzi (#6), Bad Romance (#2), and her latest Telephone (#9). They have all also been #1 in USA Billboard’s Top 40 Pop Charts. She is simply amazing and appeals to a large audience of concert goers.

Can’t wait to see LADY GAGA live in Atlantic City on July 4th, 2010.

The Phase 3 expansion of “The Walk” Atlantic City Outlets will cost $15 million and add 45,000 square feet of retail space and as many as 12 outlet stores. The new Phase III expansion will immediately create about 400 construction jobs and more than another 300 permanent jobs after new stores start opening, possibly as soon as the end of this summer. A major part of the funding, $9-million, will come from a loan by CRDA / Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

CRDA is also planning to build a $30 million parking garage at the corner of Fairmount and Mississippi avenues, adjacent to the third phase. The 1,200-space garage is expected to be completed in early 2011.

The location of the Phase III expansion is currently open space, and is bordered by Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Fairmount ave, Mississippi and Arctic avenues, near the foot of the Atlantic City Expressway. The project site near the foot of the Atlantic City Expressway will start very shortly in 2010.

The current Owners and Developers of “The Walk” Atlantic City Outlets is Baltimore’s Cordish Company. They are developers of several major retail projects in the US, including “The Walk” outlet center in Atlantic City, NJ. The Walk opened in 2003 and is the 8th largest retail outlet center in the United States by gross leasable square feet, retail shopping industry reports show.

Announcements relating to the Phase 4 Expansion of “The Walk” Atlantic City Outlets are trickling in and it looks as though Cordish will creat an “Atlantic City Live” Experience similar to other Cordish brands: Power Plant
Live! in Baltimore, Fourth Street Live! in Louisville, Ky., and KC Live! in Kansas City, Mo.. It will include more retail space, nightclubs, comedy clubs, a bowling alley, outdoor concert venue, new restrooms and an creative element of live entertainment among other things as unveiled by David S. Cordish, chairman of the Baltimore, MD based Cordish Co.

Atlantic City, NJ - March 17th, 2010

Steel Pier Amusements given two-year stay, signed through through summer 2012!

The rumors of the end of world famous Steel Pier’s life as we know it were greatly exaggerated: the pier’s current iteration has been extended thru the summer of 2012. The two-year reprieve came after a slew of articles in the winter of 2009 celebrating what was then a one-year extension. Those articles made numerous references to 2009 being the pier’s swan song, and citing the redevelopment that pier owner Donald Trump has in mind. Said redevelopment was covered in an earlier Mole post, and has been publicly said to be a hotel/condo/retail complex. It’s totally safe to assume that the Pier’s life extension is probably a combined result of the Trump machine running into a one-two punch of regulatory issues and the notoriously horrible credit market of recent times. Despite those problems, design work is still thought to be under way. It’ll be a sad day indeed when Steel Pier is forced to cease operations, as the Catanoso family and a supporting cast of hundreds over the years have done wonders and performed miracles to keep family entertainment available in a decidedly over-21 market. In the Mole’s (and likely many others) humble opinion, the loss of Steel Pier, whenever it does regrettably come to pass, can not be categorized as “in the name of progress”. One would hope that some prominent place in whatever Trump ends up building on the site gets a hefty helping of the Steel Pier historical treatment: a photo gallery, several plaques, artifacts under glass, etc. Steel Pier is an icon. Icons should endure, even if not in their completely original form.

Atlantic City’s boardwalk

has had a long and turbulent history, one filled with ups and downs. Right now though, things are looking up. Recently, Forbes Traveler named Atlantic City’s boardwalk number one in the United States.

The boardwalk of today features a number of improvements and advancements since its original construction in 1870. Then again, when the boardwalk was originally built, its only purpose was to help limit the amount of sand dragged in by visitors coming from beachside. The original boardwalk eventually spanned 7 miles along the coast from Atlantic City to Longport, making it the longest in the world. In the Hurricane of 1944 much of this was destroyed. Now the Atlantic City boardwalk is an impressive 5.75 miles long, still longer than any other boardwalk on the planet. The construction has also changed to make use of steel reinforcements which help to ensure that this incarnation of the boardwalk isn’t going anywhere.

But what about it makes the Atlantic City boardwalk so attractive to potential visitors? Simply, everything! If you have ever been to Atlantic City you are aware of the fact that the boardwalk is host to many shops, restaurants, attractions for people of all ages, and a great atmosphere. If you’re in the mood for something strange or peculiar, you can swing by the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum. Follow that up by checking out the Pier Shops at Caesar’s, or maybe a trip down to the Steel Pier, home to 24 amusement rides including a custom built double-decker carousel which features hand painted artwork of scenes from Atlantic City’s past. It also doesn’t hurt that most of the city’s casinos are completely accessible via the boardwalk, including the Showboat, Taj Mahal, and Caesar’s.

Needless to say, the Atlantic City boardwalk is an American icon with a rich past and an even richer future. When the time comes for you to book your trip to Atlantic City be sure to treat yourself and not cheat yourself, take a stroll on the boardwalk. It’s a vacation destination in and of itself, and it’s better than any other in America! See all the Atlantic City Hotels on the Boardwalk.

New Jersey Transit Adding new Atlantic City Line

Earlier this week, the New Jersey Transit announced the authorization of a contract which will create the first direct linking of its two South Jersey rail services. The Pennsauken Transit Center will now link the River Line rail system to the Atlantic City Rail Line. The contract permits the construction of a 200-foot platform with a 60-foot canopy for all riders who board the River Line trains. It also allows for updates to security, ticket vending machines, drainage and other maintainence services, and lighting. On the Atlantic City side of things, a pair of 300-foot-long platforms will be build on both sides of the Atlantic City tracks, stairs, and two elevators to provide accessibility for disabled riders.

In addition to the additional access to rail services this will provide, the station will also provide access to the NJ Transit bus service.

Work on the project is expected to begin this fall and be completed by the end of 2012.

New Jersey and Sports Betting – Perfect Together?

Strap in, kids. The Mole has been off the air for a while and I have an Atlantic City opus in store here. (By the way, did the people who came up with the tourism slogan “New Jersey and You, Perfect Together” ever pause to realize that the slogan is essentially an invitation to write your own joke about New Jersey? Last time I looked, there were a shortage of New Jersey jokes out there.)

Before I get started, let me just say that the political end of the discussion on sports betting is not what I am advocating, talking about, or anything else. Whether you or I are for or against whatever line of thought that is out there is personal business. Politics, of course, has to get brought up in the natural direction of this discussion. For the record, the legislative drive to bring sports betting to New Jersey has bipartisan support; for stereotypical political reasons you might think it is solely a Democratic initiative. The legislation was introduced by then-Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Democrat, but Republican support was soon to follow. That’s as overtly political as I’m going to get. The inner workings and resulting partisanship of New Jersey state politics and (in this case) the very long and complicated discussion of the Federal and State legal interactions that are necessary for legalization of sports betting is another topic for an entirely different place on the Internet. My concern, as it has been since the first Mole post, is tourism. You don’t have to believe that there is a connection between legalized betting and tourism, but I assure you that one does exist. Having got all that out in the open, let’s get started:

The recent push to legalize sports betting (again, see below) is the direct result of the Borgata poker room illegal sports betting ring, dubbed “Operation High Roller”, which was publicized after an 18-month investigation when 18 people were arrested on November 14th, 2007. Of the 18 people arrested, six were Borgata employees and four had ties to the Philadelphia mob and its jailed head, Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino.

The idea of legalizing sports betting in New Jersey crops up every few years, and that news cycle gets accelerated whenever New Jersey is mentioned in any form of an illegal gambling news piece. The back-story is easy: in 1992, Congress passed The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which essentially made sports betting illegal nationwide save for Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon. The language of the law contained a provision for a one year window for states that had regulated casinos for at least 10 years to pass a matching state law that would allow sports betting. Said window was put into the law specifically for New Jersey, as Congress realized that Las Vegas had embraced betting in the casinos, and maybe New Jersey would be motivated to do the same? The window closed on New Year’s Day of 1994. The exchange of information went something like this:

Congress: “Hey, New Jersey. We carved a nice fat loophole into this law specifically for you. Aren’t we nice? What say you take advantage of our generosity?”

New Jersey: “…blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, 1993 Governor’s race, Bill Bradley used to play pro basketball and he has a ton of unions contributing to his campaigns and those unions may or may not have organized crime ties, and they want to keep their undocumented cash flow, so that somehow may have something to do with our inaction but we’re not really sure, and partisan bickering… <sound of emergency room heart monitor connected to dead person>

Congress: “Alrighty then, next item.”

Now, with the window having been permanently closed as of 1994, the push to get sports action into the casinos not only faces political infighting and those genuinely opposed to such a thing happening, but also the tiny little problem of a Federal ban that the state had the chance to do something about and didn’t. For reasons that are passing of my personal understanding, the taboo on sports betting in a regulated and normalized setting is so awful that New Jersey would rather let the New York Mafia, the Philadelphia Mafia, and Caribbean offshore websites handle the needs of individuals interested in betting. With their bets, New Jersey is saying “Fuhgeddaboudit” to millions in tax revenue and further millions in ancillary revenue. There will be more on this later, because as with anything else, it’s all about money. And so we have a new exchange of information that should shape up something like this:

New Jersey: “Hi, Congress. We’re all about the sports betting thing now. Did you see the stuff going on at Borgata?”

Congress: (checks watch, stifles chuckle): “New Jersey, you’re about 14 years behind the play. No go on that, sorry. That 1994 loophole was akin to a free pass from the teacher, and you proceeded to mumble something about the dog eating your homework.”

New Jersey: “We’re planning on getting a state law passed and then going to court about that pesky 1994 bit.”

Congress: “You’re going to go to court in an attempt to overturn one specific section of a perfectly Constitutional piece of Federal law?”

New Jersey: “That’s the plan, yes.”

Congress: “Should a party be thrown for one guest if the guest was 14 years off on the date of the event? This is not unlike that philosophical line about a tree falling in the woods.”

New Jersey: “That’s a tad bit of a mischaracterization, don’t you think?”

Congress: “Nope. Not really. Good luck with that overturning the ban thing.”

End result: the next time New Jersey needs something from Congress, or more specifically when someone at the state level needs the flexing of some Congressional muscle to get something done, the legislator in question is pretty likely to hear the following:

“Thank you for calling the United States Congress. To continue in English, press 1. If you are New Jersey and you need a favor, nobody’s home.”

The above scenario is very well what may occur, unless New Jersey has a serious shift in its thinking. One thing that I can’t get out of my head (warning: overt politics) is that New Jersey is historically pretty liberal. Even if the southern half of the state isn’t, we down here in NJ’s Dirty South simply do not have the sheer population numbers to overcome North Jersey and its left-wing bent. Knowing that we are as a state a pretty deep shade of political blue, you would think that the words “additional tax revenue” attached to almost anything would make our political machines in this state take a good look at whatever would generate that revenue, especially given the frequent and justified ramblings about property tax and underfunded schools, roads, etc. here.

The current occupant of the State House hasn’t been the greatest friend to the casino industry or to the tourism industry in general, but let’s think about this: all that “ancillary revenue” I said I would talk about above. Here it is. Let’s say sports betting in New Jersey gets the legal OK, with the usual caveats. Chief among those caveats is that betting on in-state teams is still verboten. So, no bets allowed on the Giants, Jets, Nets, Devils, Rutgers, etc. Even with that roadblock in place, the illegal element is quashed but not entirely gone, because a market for their services still exists. If that concern really does exist in the higher levels of government, and if higher levels of government happen to read The Mole, you’re welcome. I just addressed that little problem for you. Now, the hypothetical law would also confine legal betting to the Atlantic City casinos. This, like buying a Hyundai, is what we call a “big duh”. Of course sports betting belongs in the casinos; that way the state gets the oversight that it would naturally demand. (Government oversight in New Jersey is somewhat like the sun in Las Vegas: you just can’t seem to escape it, no matter how hard you try.)

There is a preciously small element of the population out there that all casinos absolutely despise: the people who walk in and walk right out without engaging in gaming. Very few people can resist the temptation to drop a few dollars into a machine after they’ve had a good dining experience, and Atlantic City is outstanding at providing good dining experiences. The reason I bring this up is that the prototypical sports bettor does not fit into this category. People are going to come in, park (more revenue), place their bets (revenue), eat (revenue), drink (revenue) and possibly shop or gamble away all or part of their winnings (yet more revenue). Add to this that New Jersey is not well-known as a friend to gaming technology. Las Vegas recently set up a way to bet from your PDA. The odds of that having that happen here are slim and none, and Slim just left town. In addition, more traffic flow into the city inherently means more cars, and that equals more parking tickets. The city and the state benefit from that alone. Plus, people seem to be forgetting that any win on sports betting within a casino can likely be treated as gambling income and is subject to tax, just the same as if you would have hit on a slot machine. The unrealized revenue is likely a figure in the hundreds of millions when all possible streams are considered. As a side note, most (if not all) Boards of Directors and/or Officers of large companies have language they must abide by that guarantees that they, by virtue of holding their positions, must do their fiduciary duty to their company. In plain English, they must do whatever will legally and reasonably make their company the largest sum of money. Betting on sports, if executed correctly and without undue (read: Mafia) influence, is a perfectly reasonable activity. The legal part is what’s tough. But what is really easy is to ask why politicians in this state (of both political parties, if you think about it) aren’t doing their fiduciary duty to the financial health of the state by doing what it takes to get to this revenue that they seem to not care about.

Let’s put aside the tax idea entirely for a minute. Out of all of this hypothetical revenue and foot traffic that would be realized from the legalization of sports betting, one overarching concept needs to be thought of more than anything: a majority of the events that garner the most betting action happen at a time of year that is extremely slow in Atlantic City. The slogan says “Always Turned On”, and while that’s true from the power company’s perspective, even the biggest backers of our fair city will admit that from November to March, it’s rather slow around these parts. Four of the biggest* illegal sports book events occur in that timeframe.

#1 – Super Bowl – Sure, plenty of people come into town to watch the game at a bar with friends, but picture the foot traffic and overall increase in visitors if people who wanted to bet on the game had to come into the casinos to place their bets. Super Bowl weekend is an otherwise bright spot during some pretty slow times for the casinos. Add to this that coming in a close second at #1A would be the AFC & NFC title games. Those two weekends are far from big-ticket weekends in terms of casino numbers and hotel occupancies.

#2 – BCS Title Game – If something gets more action placed on it than pro football, college football has to be it. An added bonus to the BCS (assuming this year’s spot in the schedule were to continue) would be its generation of traffic on a weekend not known for being busy – the weekend after New Year’s.

#3 – March Madness – The lion’s share of the action is of course on the Final Four, but the entire 64-team tourney generates millions in bets over a period of three weeks in which Atlantic City is just starting to wake up for the season. The weather is just starting to get nice again as the Men’s Finals dates for this year (April 5th and 7th) come around. March Madness is big to the point that it could become Atlantic City’s new shoulder season: rather than the two weeks post-Miss America that the city used to enjoy, how about three weeks before the really good weather driven in part by sports betting and the occasional convention?

#4 – World Series – This is the one event that takes place outside of my specified timeframe, but mid to late October isn’t exactly humming around here either. There’s still some convention business and there’s still the occasional nice day to get out on the golf course, but since the demise of Miss America, the season really does trail off drastically after Labor Day.

* – Bookmakers don’t exactly publish statistics, and both the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority were unable to help me when I called looking for detailed information. I also Googled extensively. Both organizations (NGCB and LVCVA) do not keep detailed betting statistics on any event other than the Super Bowl. Nobody can say that the Mole doesn’t try, but I’ll freely admit that my top four events are a well-educated guess.

So, in short, New Jersey needs sports betting, even if certain disinterested parties like the state government don’t seem to agree. Granted, the legal hurdles are high, and the political hurdles are potentially even higher. But, the legalization of sports betting will do a good bit to ensure that Atlantic City becomes the “regional destination” that we keep hearing about. Politics aside, the triad of sports betting, more airline service into Atlantic City International, and the express rail line from New York are more than likely the three largest impediments to Atlantic City becoming a truly regional destination in which a majority of the traffic are not of the day-tripping automotive variety.

March 2010 – Breaking News! N.J. Senate committee approves sports betting constitutional amendment vote! Read the Artice here!

2010 Atlantic City Airshow – Thunder Over the Boardwalk Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

An annual event sposnored by the Harrah’s Entertainment in Atlantic City, the Airshow is accurately named “Thunder Over The Boardwalk”. People come from 100′s of miles a away to watch one of the East Coasts best Airshows. “Thunder Over The Boardwalk” Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Begining at 11:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day, FREE on the beach and Boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa presents the AC Airshow 2009 featuring incredible aerobatic maneuvers, military and civilian pilots formation flying and solo routines, one of the most popular events in Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore. Remember to book hotel rooms in advance this year as the Airshow draws 100′s of thousands of spectators annually!

The 8th annual Atlantic City Airshow, “Thunder Over the Boardwalk” is coming up on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010, and by all accounts it is set to be another rousing success. City estimates put the crowd at somewhere in the area of 750,000 people. Mark your calendars! We’ll update this post with all the details at they are available.

Atlantic City’s airshow has become the second-largest beachfront airshow in the country, ranking behind only Fort Lauderdale’s Air and Sea Show, which is typically held in the first week of May. Also, rumors are swirling regarding the 2010 airshow headliner. The Navy’s Blue Angels have expressed a strong interest in returning to AC after their special co-starring appearance with the Air Force’s Thunderbirds in 2009, which celebrated the Blues’ 60th anniversary. Those directly in the know on the topic say that the Blues want to return because of the high level of hospitality and professionalism associated with “Thunder Over the Boardwalk” and also due to the uniquely long show line (industry-speak for the length of airspace that the crowd has access to) that AC’s beach and Boardwalk present. While the usual land-based airshow typically uses a runway for a show line that is somewhere around 10,000 feet long (just under two miles), the four-mile strip of AC beach makes for a longer and thinner crowd line that in turn makes for more fun for the displaying pilots. Atlantic City’s reputation as an airshow city has also extended to the far North, as there is even interest on the part of Canada’s Snowbirds Demonstration Team in flying next year’s show. The Snowbirds are no stranger to Southern New Jersey, as they have flown at the Millville “Wheels and Wings” show in the last few years. No matter which US team pays a visit next year, the Snowbirds might still make an appearance, as they fly a handful of shows every year in the US, and they are often accompanied on the bill by an American jet team. Plan now for the Atlantic City Airshow 2010!

Atlantic City Limos – Limousines

The Great Transportation Debate…Limo or no limo, that is the question !

The old saying goes that “getting there is half the fun”. When planning a trip to Atlantic City, getting here is essential. The overwhelming majority of our city’s clientele drives in or takes a bus. The small amount that do fly in, either into Atlantic City International or Philadelphia International, still has to make it into Atlantic City itself. If your trip involves more than a sedan’s worth of people, and there is a singular destination in mind (e.g.: bachelor party that’s playing golf) there is only one way to go: get a limo.

There are the obvious reasons to hire a limo: sure, it’s flashy. When you pull up in front of the casino someone might mistake you for a reality show star or something like that. Exotic rides are even better: despite a recent popularity surge, stretched Hummers are still not all that prevalent on city streets. Your personal wow factor is directly proportional to the wow factor of the vehicle. But more than that, there are good, solid, practical reasons for paying to be chauffeured when you visit Atlantic City, or anywhere else for that matter.

#1 – Why Drive?

Especially for golf outings, bachelor or bachelorette parties, or any large same-day or overnight social gathering, the idea of driving to the event does stink. If it makes any sort of sense logistically, the limo, van, party bus, etc. should be directed to a pickup spot that is convenient for at least a majority of those attending. If 12 guys are partying on a Friday night and you all live somewhat close together, book the car to come to the home of the most conveniently located member of the group. Limo prices can be shocking upon first quote, but often turn into a small line-item when dividing everything up. Make no mistake, limos are expensive and they have every right to be: they’re a large, heavy vehicle that is not terribly fuel-efficient, and they need to be driven by a person who has an appreciable level of training. They are also quite expensive to build and outfit. All this being said, no one can argue the fun, convenience, and safety that a limo brings to your party. See below for all the info.

#2 – Fun

For those of us who aren’t CEO’s, being in a limo never gets old. It’s just plain fun. When I went on my last cruise in May, I booked a stretch limo to take me from my house to the pier. My girlfriend and I sipped champagne and watched the traffic go by while relaxing and getting our buzz on. Leaving for a trip is often the last stressful moment before the trip itself: did anyone forget anything, etc. Not for us that day. I believe it was in large part due to us not having to park, drive, and worry about getting to the ship on time.

#3 – Convenience

Money may not necessarily buy happiness, but it can buy a reduction in stress. A limo company’s sole purpose is to get you from Point A to Point B in comfort, safety, and style. Why people would opt away from a service like that assuming that it’s logistically and financially feasible is totally beyond me. Also, let’s not forget that the typical large party that comes to the city’s casinos is not a stationary group. The average bachelor party that I come across in my work makes at least two stops: from pickup into town, then they will get picked up to go to the daytime activity (fishing, golf), back to the hotel, out to dinner, and then after dinner to a club, sometimes of the gentleman’s variety and sometimes not. The financial side of paying for the service is easily neutralized by keeping in mind the absence of stress that results.

#4 – Safety

When was the last time you heard about a tragic limousine accident? Right, that’s what I thought. Limo companies, no matter the type of vehicle you book with them, have to have people driving for them with excellent safety records. Anyone who knows New Jersey knows how bad our car insurance situation has been over the last few years, and professional providers of transportation are not immune to those problems.

Now that I’ve made the case for limos, I’ll tell you where to go to get the best of them in our fair city:

There are really only two kids on the block in the local limo business, and the older of the two is Atlantic Limousine. Atlantic has been in business since the 1920’s, and the Geiger family that runs it can easily be called the first family of transportation in Atlantic City. While they do have sedans and party buses, their main focus is on limos. Atlantic is the contract provider for high roller services to most of the casinos. They are definitely a solid choice for limo or car services. 1-800-348-3484

The new kid in town is Torgro Limousine Service. They are Atlantic’s only real competition, and they have made the concierge’s life easier by having a few exotic vehicles available in town. It used to be that if I had a guest that wanted a stretched car or SUV, I used to have to use companies around Cherry Hill or Philadelphia. There’s a company in Cherry Hill that has a stretched Infiniti QX56 that seats 20 people…talk about wow factor. Torgro’s offerings include a stretched Hummer, a Ford Excursion, Lincoln Navigator, and best of all, a stretched Dodge Magnum. I think that Magnum looks cooler than anything else around here. People are somewhat used to seeing the stretched Navigator or Hummer – what they’re not used to (yet) is that Dodge. If you want to turn heads, it’s the way to go.

Have fun and enjoy the new Atlantic City, NJ!
